Professor Julie Cairney is a materials engineer and academic leader at the University of Sydney, where she serves as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Enterprise) and holds a professorial appointment in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. She previously served as interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) from November 2024. Cairney earned a Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering in 1998 and a PhD in 2002, both from the University of New South Wales. Her research focuses on the microstructural characterisation of materials using advanced microscopy techniques to examine three-dimensional structures at the atomic scale. She has been an academic at the University of Sydney for over two decades and previously served as CEO of Microscopy Australia. Cairney is recognised as one of the youngest full professors at the university and one of the few female professors of engineering in Australia. Her contributions to the field have earned her the 2021 Acta Materialia Silver Medal, fellowship in the Royal Society of New South Wales, a 2005 JSPS Short-Term Fellowship, and finalist status for the 2022 Eureka Prize for ANSTO Prize for Innovative Use of Technology. With over 19,000 citations on Google Scholar, her work in materials science has significantly advanced understanding of material microstructures and their properties. She maintains active involvement in research leadership, industry collaboration strategies, and academic service at the university.
