Helps students see their full potential.
Kamel Haddad served as Professor of Mathematics at California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM), where he also held key administrative roles including Vice Provost for Planning and Academic Resources and Interim Provost from 2014 to 2020. During his tenure as Interim Provost, CSUSM achieved record-high freshman and transfer graduation rates. He facilitated the introduction of engineering programs, led the Student Access Initiative, and implemented enrollment and funding models driven by student demand. Additionally, Haddad had a special assignment as consultant for student success initiatives in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Prior to CSUSM, he was Associate Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering at California State University, Bakersfield.
Haddad earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in mathematics, in the area of topological and symbolic dynamics, from the University of Maryland. He is a Senior Fulbright Scholar and recipient of California State University, Bakersfield’s Millie Ablin Outstanding Professor Award. His research focuses on topological dynamics and ergodic theory, with notable publications including “Recurrence in pairs” (2008, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, with William Ott), “Synchronous recurrence” (2015, with William Ott and Ronnie Pavlov), “New limiting notions of the IP type in the enveloping semigroup” (1996), and “Enveloping Semigroups and Mappings onto the Two-Shift” (1998, with Kenneth Berg and David Gove). In collaboration with CSUSM colleague Anna Woodcock, he co-authored “Increasing Hispanic STEM Majors' Persistence to Degree” (2025) and secured a three-year, $830,000 grant to support families of incoming Hispanic STEM majors.
