Professor Kandeepan Sithamparanathan holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Communications) from the University of Technology, Sydney. He is a Professor in the School of Engineering at RMIT University, where he serves as Associate Dean of Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering, Head of Department for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Program Director for Telecommunications Engineering. His career also includes an Earth Station Satellite Fellow position at the University of Technology, Sydney in 2001/2002. Professor Sithamparanathan is recognized for his contributions to next-generation communication systems, with research focusing on 5G/6G wireless networks, cognitive radio communications, UAV and satellite communications, advanced statistical signal processing, machine learning for communications and radars, and security issues in communication technologies.
He has authored the book Cognitive Radio Techniques: Spectrum Sensing, Interference Mitigation and Localization, published by Artech House in 2011, and over 160 scientific papers in top journals and conferences, garnering more than 11,300 citations. Notable awards include the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments in 2019, IEEE Communications Society Certificate of Appreciation for 10 years of dedication in 2015, Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Personal Satellite Services in 2012, RMIT Research Excellence Award for Industry HDR Engagement in 2018, IEEE Exemplary Reviewer for IEEE Communications Letters in 2011, and the Engineering Excellence team award in 2003. Professor Sithamparanathan has secured several million dollars in research funding grants and supervises PhD students. He leads initiatives such as the RMIT Space Industry Hub's Advanced Communications and IoT program and is Deputy Lead of WILAB. As Chair of the IEEE Victoria Communications Society Chapter and Senior Member of IEEE, he maintains extensive collaborations with industry partners including Thales, Telstra, and Ericsson, and research organizations like CSIRO and the German Aerospace Center. He teaches courses in wireless and mobile communications, satellite communications, and signal processing, earning high student ratings.
