Dr. Kathy J. Brown is the Endowed Assistant Professor of Art Education and Director of Graduate Studies in Art Education at the University of Arkansas School of Art in Fayetteville. As part of the arts and culture faculty, she directs the M.A. program in Art Education, an accredited research-oriented residency offering full funding—tuition waivers, stipends, and assistantships—to all graduate students. The program emphasizes theoretical studies, interdisciplinary methods, and culturally responsive art education for diverse settings including K-12 schools, museums, and community centers. Dr. Brown holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston, earned in 2018. With a background as a practicing artist and former K-12 art teacher, her research specializations are Afrofuturism, African-American cultural narratives, pedagogies of place, antiracist pedagogies, and arts-based research.
Throughout her career, Dr. Brown previously served as Assistant Professor of Art Education in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas. She has received notable honors, including designation as a 2023 Amon Carter Museum Community Artist, and actively serves on review boards for art education journals. Her scholarly publications demonstrate significant impact, with titles such as "Message from the Mothership: Futurist Art Pedagogy for Black Lives" co-authored with Lauren Cross in Visual Inquiry (2021); "Black Hair as Metaphor Explored through Duoethnography and Arts-Based Research" (2021); "Same Standards, Different Classes: A Comparative Case Study of Two Art Classes Within Communities of Contrasting Socioeconomic Status" (2022); "Art Education and the Practice of Freedom"; and "Diverted Flight Path: The California Art Education Association's Progress Toward Sustainable Runways." Dr. Brown chairs and serves on graduate committees, organizes student writing retreats like Ink + Inspiration, and hosts workshops and events promoting global arts dialogues, such as collaborations with international artists.
