Katherine L. Granelli, Ed.D., serves as Associate Professor and Director of the M.A. in Infant/Toddler Early Childhood Special Education in the Child Study Department at St. Joseph's University, New York, Long Island Campus in Suffolk County. She also chairs the Child Study Department and co-directs the Office of Student Accessibility Services. Her academic background includes an Ed.D. in Literacy Studies from Hofstra University in 2009, an M.S. in Special Education from LIU Brentwood in 1982, and a B.A. in Child Study from St. Joseph's University, New York in 1981.
Dr. Granelli brings more than 20 years of professional experience in early intervention, adult education, and special education to her role. As an early intervention teacher, she provided home-based instruction to infants, toddlers, and their parents to address special needs effectively. She has held positions as a teacher’s union representative, member of a participatory management team, and mentor teacher. Her research interests center on the literacy capabilities—encompassing reading, writing, and language—of children with autistic disorder. Specializing in children with special needs, particularly autism, early intervention, adult education, and special education, Dr. Granelli is actively involved in professional organizations including the Council for Exceptional Children, National Council of Teachers of English, International Reading Association, National Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Autism Society of America. In 2010, she delivered a presentation titled "Revealing the Hidden Language Capabilities of Children with Autistic Disorder during Oral Reading" at the International Autism Symposium hosted by the Geneva Centre for Autism in Toronto, Canada. Her scholarly contribution includes the chapter "Imagination: The Bridge to Meaning" published in 2007 in the book Imagination, Cognition, and Language Acquisition: A Unified Approach to Theory and Practice, edited by C. Coreil (New Jersey City University Press). Dr. Granelli teaches graduate and undergraduate courses such as Psychology of the Exceptional Child, Special Education: Methods and Materials, and Special Education Student Teaching. She is certified as a New York State Schools Against Violence in Education (S.A.V.E.) and Dignity for All Students Act (D.A.S.A.) officer.
