Professor Katie Wynne serves as Head of School and Dean of the Joint Medical Program in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia. She practices as a Clinical Endocrinologist within Hunter New England Health. Her academic journey began with a degree in Medical Science and Experimental Psychology from the University of Cambridge in 1996, followed by an MBBS from King’s College London in 1999. Wynne completed a PhD in Physiology in 2007 as part of a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship at Imperial College London. She held positions as National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London until 2012, conducting postdoctoral research on appetite regulation. Upon relocating to Newcastle, she took up roles as Senior Staff Specialist and Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital.
Wynne's research specializations include antenatal endocrinology, diabetes, metabolic disease, obesity, and transgender health science. She has co-authored the book A Guide to Transgender Health State-Of-the-Art Information for Gender-Affirming People and Their Supporters (2019) and contributed chapters such as The endocrine examination (2025), Diabetes of the Exocrine Pancreas (2021), and Clinical Management of Diabetes in Pregnancy (2015). She has published over 60 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and 8 book chapters, securing more than $6 million in competitive research grants. As a Chief Investigator on NHMRC MRFF funding, she leads efforts to improve health outcomes for trans youth and children. Her achievements are honored with awards including the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award for the Queer Med Ed Project (2022), the ACI HNE Rural Innovation Award (2022), and the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Quality Initiative Award in Clinical Excellence and Patient Safety (2022). Wynne chairs the Hunter Medical Research Institute program on Equity in Health and Wellbeing and holds qualifications MA (Hons Cantab), MBBS, FRCP, PhD, FRACP, GAICD.
