Kenneth Scheve is the I.A. O’Shaughnessy Dean of the College of Arts & Letters and Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. He received his B.A. with highest honors in Economics from the University of Notre Dame in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University in 2000. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2025, Scheve held tenured faculty positions at Yale University, where he served as the Dean Acheson Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs and Dean of Social Science from 2022 to 2025, Stanford University from 2012 to 2020 including as Director of The Europe Center from 2013 to 2018, and the University of Michigan from 2004 to 2006.
A political economist, Scheve studies the domestic and international governance of modern capitalism with research interests in international and comparative political economy. His work examines inequality and redistribution, the politics of globalization, the social and political consequences of long-run economic change, and climate politics. Scheve's scholarship appears regularly in leading journals such as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics. Key books include Taxing the Rich: A History of Fiscal Fairness in the United States and Europe co-authored with David Stasavage (Princeton University Press, 2016) and Globalization and the Perceptions of American Workers co-authored with Matthew J. Slaughter (Columbia University Press, 2001). Recent articles include "Trains, Trade, and Transformation: A Spatial Rogowski Theory of America’s 19th Century Protectionism" with Theo Serlin (American Journal of Political Science, 2024), "The German Trade Shock and the Rise of the Neo-Welfare State in Early 20th Century Britain" with Theo Serlin (American Political Science Review, 2023), and "Foundations of a New Democracy: Schooling, Inequality, and Voting in the Early Republic" with Tine Paulsen and David Stasavage (American Political Science Review, 2023). Scheve is a recipient of numerous awards including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2020), David A. Lake Award (2018), Michael Wallerstein Award (2012), Franklin L. Burdette/Pi Sigma Alpha Award (2007), and Robert O. Keohane Award (2004). He serves as chair of the International Political Economy Society.
