About Kerri

Kerri Finlay is a Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Regina. She holds the position of Canada Research Chair in Water in a Changing Environment and serves as Director of the Institute of Environmental Change and Society. Finlay earned a BSc from the University of Toronto in 1999 and a PhD from the University of Guelph in 2005. Her research focuses on aquatic ecology and biogeochemistry, with particular emphasis on the role of Prairie lakes, wetland ponds, and reservoirs in the global carbon budget, as well as the effects of anthropogenic activities and climate change on water quality and carbon cycling dynamics. She employs field-based analyses to understand mechanisms driving these processes and to predict future conditions under changing climate and land-use scenarios. Finlay also participates in interdisciplinary teams that integrate social and political perspectives and leads a Saskatchewan-wide community-based water quality monitoring program.

Finlay’s work addresses limnology, carbon budgets of lakes, greenhouse gas emissions, and lake water quality. She collaborates on long-term studies of water quality in Saskatchewan lakes and contributes to research examining the ecological impacts of wetland drainage and other environmental changes. Her appointments at the University of Regina include progression through academic ranks in the Department of Biology, where she maintains an active research program supported by major funding, including her Canada Research Chair award.
