About Kim

Emeritus Professor Kim Hein serves as Adjunct Professor in the School of Earth and Oceans at The University of Western Australia. A graduate of the University of Adelaide, she earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economic Geology in 1989, receiving the Ralph Tate Medal for Geology and the Homestake Prize for Economic Geology that year. She obtained her PhD in Geosciences from the University of Tasmania in 1995, focusing her thesis on the structure and geochemistry of gold mineralisation in the Mt Todd goldfield, Pine Creek Inlier, Northern Territory. Her professional career encompasses diverse roles in the geosciences sector, including Geologist positions (Project, Research, Senior) at Western Mining Corporation Ltd from 1993 to 1997, Structural Geologist at North Limited from 1997 to 1999, and Consultant/Project Manager at Novogenesis Pty Ltd in 1999. From 2000 to 2004, she conducted postdoctoral research at Utrecht University. In 2004, she was appointed to the Chamber of Mines Chair and Professorship of Mining Geology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, holding the position until 2018 and subsequently becoming Emeritus Professor. She also served as Professional Professor at Wits in 2012 and as a seasonal lecturer in Orebody Modelling in 2020.

Professor Hein's research interests centre on applied structural geology, exploration and mining of Archaean and Proterozoic mineral deposits in Australia and Africa, metals exploration and mining, research and development, orebody modelling, and geoscience education. She contributed as a lead researcher and Senior Executive Team member in the AMIRA WAXI P934 West Africa Exploration Initiative project from 2006 to 2018, and as structural geology consultant for Burkina Faso's Projet d’Appui au Développement du Secteur Minier from 2016 to 2018. Her teaching portfolio at Wits included Mining Geosciences, Resource Modelling, Exploration and Targeting, Remote Sensing, and Applied Field Sciences. Key publications include "Intrusion-related affinity and orogenic gold overprint at the Paleoproterozoic Bonikro Au–(Mo) deposit (Côte d’Ivoire, West African Craton)" (2022, Mineralium Deposita), "A new interpretation of soft-sediment deformation features (SSDs) in the Parktown Formation (lower West Rand Group)" (2024, South African Journal of Geology), and "Shannon entropy as an indicator for sorting processes in hydrothermal systems" (2020, Entropy). Awards include the 2014 University of Witwatersrand Vice-Chancellor’s Transformation Individual Award. Currently, she directs KAAH Geoservices, providing expertise in structural geology for mineral resource targeting, exploration program development, and capacity building.
