Dr. Tang Kim San is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy at Monash University Malaysia. He earned his PhD from the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta, a BSc from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University. Before joining Monash University Malaysia as a lecturer, he served as a research fellow at the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre in Canada. His research investigates the mechanisms of brain cell death in neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species (ROS), disruptions in the antioxidant system, apoptosis, necrosis, and pharmacological interventions in disease models. Dr. Tang's work explores neuroprotective agents such as zinc oxide nanoparticles and polydatin for conditions like Parkinson's disease and dementia-related disorders.
Dr. Tang has published extensively on these topics. Notable publications include "Neuroprotective properties of zinc oxide nanoparticles: therapeutic implications for Parkinson’s disease" (Bioscience Reports, 2024), "Paraquat and Parkinson’s Disease: the molecular crosstalk of upstream signal transduction pathways leading to apoptosis" (Current Neuropharmacology, 2024), "Investigating the Potential of Yttrium Oxide Nanoparticles and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for Parkinson’s Disease Treatment" (NeuroSci, 2025), "The current and future perspectives of zinc oxide nanoparticles in biomedicine" (Journal of Drug Targeting, 2019), "Protective Effects of Polydatin Against Dementia-Related Disorders" (Nutrients, 2022), and "Protective effect of arachidonic acid and linoleic acid on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and cytotoxicity in PC12 cells" (Lipids in Health and Disease, 2014). He has received a scholarship from the International Society of Neurochemistry and the ‘Focus on Stroke’ Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. In 2018, he was awarded MUPA's Supervisor of the Year at Monash University Malaysia. Dr. Tang teaches units including PHR1031, PHR1022, PHR2042, BPS2011, and BPS3032 in the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science programs, contributing to pharmacy education.
