About Kristian

Professor Kristian Rotaru serves as a Professor in the Department of Accounting within Monash Business School at Monash University. He earned his PhD in Economics from Monash University in 2010, a Candidate of Sciences degree in Economics (equivalent to a PhD) from the State Investment Professionals’ Academy in Russia, a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Monash University, and a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Psychology from Monash University. In his career, Rotaru has held positions including PhD Program Director in the Department of Accounting, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Monash Business Behavioural Laboratory, and Associate Director of the Opportunity Tech Lab. He is an Honorary Fellow at the Brain, Mind and Markets Lab at the University of Melbourne and a visiting researcher at BrainPark, with collaborations at the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health and the Clinical Psychedelic Research Lab at Monash University. He lectures units on Business Analytics, Accounting Information Systems, Financial Modelling, and Philosophy of Research to honours, masters, and PhD students.

As a decision scientist, Kristian Rotaru conducts interdisciplinary research across accounting, information systems, finance, and supply chain management, incorporating cognitive psychology to investigate impulsive and compulsive behaviours, emotional regulation, and wellbeing. A pioneer and key contributor to neuroaccounting, his work employs neurophysiological methods such as eye-tracking, cognitive pupillometry, electrodermal activity, electrocardiography, electroencephalography, and virtual reality. Notable publications include "Supply chain risk identification with value-focused process engineering" (Journal of Operations Management, 2009, 480 citations), "Effect of information technology-enabled supply chain integration on firm's operational performance" (Journal of Enterprise Information Management, 2021, 211 citations), "An analytical model for system-wide and tier-specific assessment of resilience to supply chain risks" (Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, 2016, 116 citations), "Humans vs. large language models: Judgmental forecasting in an era of advanced AI" (International Journal of Forecasting, 2025), and "Decoding effort: toward a measure – and a new understanding – of effort intensity in accounting research" (Management Accounting Research, 2025). In 2018, he won the inaugural Commbank Rising Star Award for Financial Wellbeing in Behavioural Insights for research addressing the disposition effect in investor behaviour. Rotaru has presented as an invited keynote speaker at CPA Australia events and delivered seminars at leading business schools in the US, Canada, UK, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia. He supervises PhD students and leads projects on behavioural interventions, digital privacy in finance, and circular economy transitions.
