Dr. Kristie Matthews is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences within the School of Primary and Allied Health Care, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. She also holds a Senior Lecturer position in the Monash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education (MCSHE). Matthews earned her PhD in 2021 from Monash University with the thesis 'Implementing Radiation Therapy Advanced Practice: A Grounded Theory Study'. Her earlier qualifications include a Master of Training and Development (2005), Graduate Diploma in Training and Development (2002), and Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiation) (1997), qualifying her as a radiation therapist. Prior to joining Monash, she served as Education Coordinator for radiation therapy at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for six years and currently holds an honorary position as Radiation Therapy Academic Advisor there. In her roles at Monash, she coordinates units in the Bachelor of Radiation Sciences and Master of Radiation Therapy programs, supports curriculum development for the Master of Advanced Radiation Therapy Practice, and leads the Student Telehealth Program to develop telehealth skills among allied health students.
Matthews' research specializations encompass health professions education and health professions workforce redesign, with a primary focus on radiation therapy. She is an Associate Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators and Associate Editor of the journal Radiography. Her contributions include the School of Primary and Allied Health Education Award for Team Excellence in Education, received in December 2024 alongside colleagues Caroline Wright and Angelina Piccolo. She has secured grants from the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria, Department of Health and Ageing, Victorian Medical Radiation Practitioners Education Trust, and Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy. Key publications feature 'Becoming the radiation therapist: Exploring the transition to practice experiences of Australian radiation therapist graduates' (Radiography, 2025), 'Allied Health Student Placements in Residential Aged Care: Attitudes, Experiences and Impact' (The Clinical Teacher, 2025), '“We might be put into situations we are uncomfortable with, but not exactly told how to deal with them”: Health professional students' experiences questioning low-value care practices during work-integrated learning' (Anatomical Sciences Education, 2026), 'A practical guide to using diary methods in qualitative research' (Anatomical Sciences Education, 2026), and 'Categorising drivers of curriculum renewal in entry-to-practice health professional education: A scoping review' (Medical Education, 2025). She leads projects such as 'Transition to practice during a pandemic: Exploring the experiences of radiation therapist graduates' and contributes to initiatives on radiation therapy advanced practice capabilities and student challenges to low-value care.
