Kristofferson Culmer is an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he also directs the Autonomous Systems Lab. He teaches courses in software engineering, including programming languages and paradigms, database management systems and software engineering, and machine learning and data analytics. Culmer additionally assists in teaching IT 1040: Problem Solving and Programming. Born and raised in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, he earned BS degrees in computer science and business from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, before completing his MS in computer science at the University of Missouri. His background in computer science informs his instruction and research activities at Mizzou.
Culmer is a dedicated advocate for higher education with extensive service contributions to the College of Engineering and the university community. He has mentored research for the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates program, led teaching for the STEM Cubs outreach program serving K-6 students, and mentored undergraduates from underrepresented communities via the Graduate Scholars of Excellence program. His research interests include autonomous systems and natural language processing, complemented by expertise in data science and machine learning as noted on his Google Scholar profile. Key publications feature 'Examining LDA2Vec and Tweet Pooling for Topic Modeling on Twitter Data' with Jeffrey Uhlmann in WSEAS Transactions on Information Science and Applications (2021). Culmer received the Junior Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from Mizzou Engineering in 2024 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Central Methodist University in 2025. These accomplishments underscore his impact in teaching, mentorship, and scholarly pursuits within computer science and related fields.
