Professor Kurt Iveson serves as Professor of Urban Geography in the School of Geosciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney. He joined the University of Sydney in 2004 as Associate Professor of Urban Geography, holding that position until 2016 before his promotion to Professor. Iveson obtained his PhD in Urban Research from the Australian National University in 2001.
Iveson's research specializes in urban geography, focusing on the governance of cities, the links between citizenship and urban spaces, public space, urban social movements, graffiti, and urban politics. He contributes to research themes in sustainable cities and communities, emphasizing democratic engagement, urban sustainability, environmental justice, urban re-wilding, and multispecies justices within the Geography Group of the School of Geosciences.
Key publications include his book Publics and the City (Blackwell, 2007), co-authored works such as Planning and Diversity in the City: Redistribution, Recognition and Encounter (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008) and Everyday Equalities: Making Multicultures in Settler Colonial Cities (University of Minnesota Press, 2019), and articles like "Cities within the City: Do-It-Yourself Urbanism and the Right to the City" (2013), "Planning in the Multicultural City: Celebrating Diversity or Reinforcing Difference?" (2014), and "Recovering the Politics of the City: From the ‘Post-Political City’ to a ‘Method of Equality’ for Critical Urban Geography" (2015). His scholarship advances understandings of inclusive urban planning, diversity, and spatial justice.
