Lakshmi Selvaratnam is an Associate Professor of Anatomy in the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia. She earned her BDS from the National University of Singapore, PhD from Queen Mary University of London in 1995, Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Before joining Monash University Malaysia in 2006, she was Associate Professor of Anatomy at the University of Malaya from 1995 to 2006.
Her academic interests encompass anatomy education, regenerative medicine focusing on mesenchymal stem cells for cartilage and tendon repair, tissue engineering, and innovative educational technologies. With over 65 peer-reviewed publications and more than 1,000 citations, notable works include "Human peripheral blood derived mesenchymal stem cells demonstrate similar characteristics and chondrogenic differentiation potential to bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells" (Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 2012), "Isolation, characterization and the multi-lineage differentiation potential of rabbit bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells" (Journal of Anatomy, 2013), "Unconfined compression properties of a porous poly(vinyl alcohol)-chitosan-based hydrogel after hydration" (Acta Biomaterialia, 2009), "Treatment outcomes of alginate-embedded allogenic mesenchymal stem cells versus autologous chondrocytes for the repair of focal articular cartilage defects in a rabbit model" (The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2012), and "Growth Differentiation Factor 5-Induced Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Enhances Tendon Healing" (2024). She co-authored the book Anatomy & Physiology: The Cardiovascular System.
Selvaratnam has been recognized with prestigious awards for advancing medical education, including the Australian Government OLT Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2012), IMU-Ron Harden Innovation in Medical Education Award (2015) for the Multi-Touch Smart Table project promoting collaborative learning, and Dean’s Award for Innovation in Teaching (2014). She has chaired conferences such as the Monash Malaysia Medical Education Conference and Surgical Anatomy Review Practical, influencing anatomy pedagogy through technology-enhanced peer teaching and blended learning strategies.
