Lee Goldman is the Cournand and Richards Professor of Cardiology (in Medicine) and Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University. He received his BA, MD, and MPH degrees from Yale University. He completed internal medicine training at the University of California, San Francisco and Massachusetts General Hospital, and cardiology training at Yale. Prior to joining Columbia in 2006, he held positions at Harvard University as Professor of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology, and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as Vice Chair of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer. From 1995 to 2006, he served as the Julius R. Krevans Professor, Chair of Medicine, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at UCSF. At Columbia, he was the Harold and Margaret Hatch Professor of the University, Executive Vice President for Health and Biomedical Sciences, and Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine, as well as Chief Executive Officer of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, until stepping down from administrative roles in 2020; he remains on the faculty as Dean Emeritus.
Goldman’s research has focused on cardiac risk assessment in non-cardiac surgery, evaluation of patients with chest pain, and priorities for the prevention and treatment of coronary disease, including development of the Goldman Index and the Coronary Heart Disease Policy Model. He is the lead editor of Goldman-Cecil Medicine. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and past president of the Association of American Physicians, the Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Association of Professors of Medicine. He has received the Glaser Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine, the John Phillips Award from the American College of Physicians, the Williams Award from the Association of Professors of Medicine, and the Blake Award from the Association of American Physicians.
