Dr. Lee-Jaye Slaughter is a Senior Lecturer and teaching-focused academic in the Tourism discipline of UQ Business School, within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Queensland. Drawing from her extensive international travel experiences, she returned to Australia to study tourism at UQ, where she obtained a Bachelor (Honours), a Doctor of Philosophy in 2000 examining backpacker tourism, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Post-doctorate, she engaged in research on tourism management, specializing in backpacker tourism, before transitioning to her current teaching-oriented role. In this capacity, she delivers courses at undergraduate and master's levels, informed by her prior research expertise.
Dr. Slaughter's academic interests center on backpacker travel, tourist motivation, and volunteerism, reflected in her 17 publications from 2000 to 2023, including five journal articles, eleven conference papers, and one book chapter. Prominent works include the 2023 journal article "Can we buffer them? Supporting healthy levels of stress and anxiety in first year international students" (with Sie, Breakey, Macionis, and Zhang), the 2022 conference paper "Minimising stress and anxiety in the ‘next normal’ learning environment" (with Macionis, Breakey, Zhan, and Sie), "Understanding travel risks in a developing country: a bottom up approach" (2019 journal article, with Lenggogeni and Ritchie), "Using action learning to improve assessment: A case study from an undergraduate tourism management course" (2007 journal article, with Ruhanen), and the book chapter "Profiling the International Backpacker Market in Australia" (2004). She has supervised completions such as the 2015 PhD "Travel risk perceptions, travel intentions and influencing factors: A natural disaster context," the 2008 PhD "The impact of international backpackers on the host society: a case study of backpackers in Pai, North Thailand," and the 2006 PhD "Sustainable Tourism Planning: An Analysis of Queensland Local Tourism Destinations." Additionally, she secured early-career UQ grants for studies on adolescents' holiday motivations (2002-2004) and long-term volunteer motivations at events (2000-2001).
