Leonardo Kaplan is a professor at the Faculdade de Educação of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), affiliated with the Departamento de Estudos Aplicados ao Ensino. He holds a doctorate in Education from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), awarded in 2017, a master’s degree in Education from UFRJ conferred in 2011, and a licentiate degree in Biological Sciences obtained in 2007. His academic work centers on critical environmental education and historical-critical pedagogy, with particular attention to public policies in environmental education, theoretical-methodological frameworks involving concepts of the state and civil society, and Marxist perspectives applied to education and socio-environmental issues.
Kaplan coordinates the Grupo de Estudos em Educação Ambiental Crítica e Pedagogia Histórico-Crítica at UERJ and has contributed to extension projects focused on teacher training in critical environmental education. His publications include analyses of discourses in federal environmental education policies, such as the Programa Nacional de Formação de Educadoras(es) Ambientais and the Política de Escolas Sustentáveis, as well as studies examining the intersections of capitalism, sustainability, and education. He has also explored the role of historical-critical pedagogy in relation to the theory of dependent capitalism in the Brazilian context. In addition to his teaching and research roles, Kaplan serves as director of the Associação dos Docentes da UERJ (Asduerj).
