Dr. Soon Li Lee is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology within the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia, where she also serves as the Undergraduate Course Director for Psychology programmes. She obtained her Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from Monash University Malaysia between 2013 and 2016. Before joining Monash University Malaysia in her current role in February 2021, she was a lecturer in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. Dr. Lee's research expertise lies in cyberpsychology, particularly technological addictions including Facebook addiction and smartphone addiction, and their negative impacts on psychological well-being. She investigates the distinctions between normal and maladaptive usage of social network sites and explores how individual differences such as personality traits (e.g., the Dark Triad) and cultural orientations contribute to susceptibility to these addictions. Her work also addresses related topics like obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychological distress, and social capital.
Dr. Lee has an extensive publication record in reputable journals. Notable works include "Confounding analysis with gaming aspects in predicting psychological distress of esports players" (2024, PsyCh Journal), "Management of food socialization for children with Prader-Willi Syndrome: An exploration study in Malaysia" (2024, PLoS ONE), "Positive Orientation and Social Capital: The Insignificance of the Mediating Effects of Social Network Sites Usages" (2024, Psychological Studies), "The Dark Triad traits, humor styles, and schadenfreude: Others' misery as the devil's laughing stocks" (2024, Japanese Psychological Research), "Facebook depression with depressed users: The mediating effects of dependency and self-criticism on Facebook addiction and depressiveness" (2023, Computers in Human Behavior), and "Positive Orientation and Psychological Distress: An Examination with Psychiatric Outpatients" (2023). She holds editorial positions including board member for Discover Psychology (until 2026), Scientific Reports (2024 and 2025 as guest editor), and Journal of Social Media Research (2025). Dr. Lee supervises research projects leading to publications in indexed journals and is accepting PhD students. Her contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
