Lincoln H. Blumell is a Full Professor of Ancient Christianity in the Department of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University, where he contributes to Theology through his scholarship and serves as Associate Dean over Research in Religious Education. He received a BA with honors in Classical and Early Christian Studies from the University of Calgary in 2001, an MA in Religious Studies with a specialization in ancient Christianity from the University of Calgary in 2003, an MSt in Jewish Studies from Christ Church, University of Oxford in 2004, and a PhD in Religious Studies focused on early Christianity from the University of Toronto in 2009. His doctoral dissertation, Lettered Christians: Christians, Letters, and Late Antique Oxyrhynchus, was published by Brill in 2012. Prior to his appointment at BYU as Assistant Professor in 2010, Blumell served as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at Tulane University from 2009 to 2010. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016 and to Full Professor in 2021.
Blumell's research specializations include the New Testament, early Christianity with an emphasis on Egypt, Greek papyrology, ancient Christian letters, and epigraphy. Among his major publications are the monographs Lettered Christians: Christians, Letters, and Late Antique Oxyrhynchus (Brill, 2012), which won the 2013 Frank W. Beare Award from the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies and the Harvey B. Black and Susan Easton Black Outstanding Publication Award from BYU Religious Education; Christian Oxyrhynchus: Texts, Documents, and Sources, Second through Fourth Centuries (co-authored with Thomas A. Wayment, Baylor University Press, 2015), recipient of the 2016 Harvey B. Black and Susan Easton Black Outstanding Publication Award; Didymus the Blind’s Commentary on Psalms 26:10–29:2 and 36:1–3 (Brepols, 2019, lead editor); and Lady Eclecte: The Lost Woman of the New Testament (Fortress Press, 2025). He edited New Testament History, Culture, and Society: A Background to the Texts of the New Testament (Religious Studies Center and Deseret Book, 2019). Blumell has authored over 90 peer-reviewed articles appearing in journals such as Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik, Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists, Harvard Theological Review, and Journal of Juristic Papyrology. His academic service includes membership on the editorial review board of TC: A Journal of Biblical Textual Criticism, committee roles with the Society of Biblical Literature and Canadian Society of Patristic Studies, and ad hoc reviewing for Journal of Biblical Literature and Oxford University Press. Notable honors encompass multiple BYU Mentoring Education Grants (2011–2015), the BYU Class of 1949 Young Faculty Award (2016–2018), a Canada Graduate Scholarship from SSHRC (2005–2008), and the Jeremias Prize for top graduate essay from the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (2005).
