About Lisa

Lisa S. Schocket, MD, serves as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, University of Maryland, Baltimore, where she holds the rank of Associate Professor. She is also Chief of the Vitreoretinal Service, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, and Medical Director of University of Maryland Eye Associates. Board certified in Ophthalmology, Dr. Schocket is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She earned a B.S. magna cum laude from Brown University and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Her postgraduate training includes a transitional internship at the University of Pennsylvania, ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania, and vitreoretinal disease fellowship at the New England Eye Center, Tufts University/Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. Prior to joining the University of Maryland faculty, she maintained a private practice in Baltimore for nine years, gaining recognition for patient care and advanced treatments.

Dr. Schocket's academic interests center on retinal diseases, with expertise in the medical and surgical management of conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusions, retinal detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and cataract complications. She has contributed numerous publications to journals including American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, and Retina. Key publications include "Effect of Pregnancy on Retinal Hemodynamics in Diabetic Versus Nondiabetic Mothers" (American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1999), "Foveolar Choroidal Hemodynamics in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy" (International Ophthalmology, 2004), "Ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography in patients with decreased vision after retinal detachment repair" (Ophthalmology, 2006), and involvement in the SCORE Study reports (Archives of Ophthalmology, 2009) and OZURDEX GENEVA Study (Ophthalmology, 2010-2011). Her awards include the 1999 ARVO Travel Fellowship Grant Program from the Retina Research Foundation/Joseph M. and Eula C. Lawrence Endowment, 1996 Graduate Hospital Research Award, and 1994 Sigma Xi Society award from Brown University. Appointed permanent Chair in 2024 after serving as Interim Chair since 2022, she leads efforts to enhance clinical programs, education, research, and community engagement, including AI-based vision screening studies and the Paladin clinical trial as principal investigator for diabetic macular edema treatments.
