Dr Lisa Young is a Lecturer in the School of Curriculum, Teaching and Inclusive Education in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. She holds a PhD, a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Health and Physical Education, and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research, all from Monash University. Following her PhD candidature from 2019 to 2022, she advanced to her current lecturing position. Young's teaching and research primarily focus on Health and Physical Education (HPE), emphasizing student voice and agency, inclusive pedagogies, curriculum, and assessment. Her approaches integrate evidence-based practices across F-12 and higher education contexts, grounded in qualitative inquiry methods such as Actor-Network Theory, concept analysis, and cartography of controversies to drive educational change and reform.
Lisa Young's research specializations encompass equity, inclusion, and transformative practices in HPE, sport, and physical activity settings, aiming to foster student-centred learning, wellbeing, and lifelong engagement through physical activity. She has published extensively in leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Sport, Education and Society, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, European Physical Education Review, and the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Notable publications include "Physical literacy: a concept analysis" (2019), "Assessing physical literacy in health and physical education" (2020), "When teachers Google physical literacy: A cartography of controversies analysis" (2022), "How is embodiment in physical education theoretically conceptualised? A concept analysis" (2024), "What's right with PE: exploring positive narratives in physical education" (2025), and "Student voice, expansive learning and transformative agency: an examination of the transformation of fitness testing pedagogies in Health and Physical Education" (2025). She contributes to academic quality via peer review. Her impact on student learning is evidenced by awards such as the 2024 Dean’s Award for Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (Early Career Category), a 2025 nomination for the Vice-Chancellor’s Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (Early Career), the 2023 Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award for Community Education Programs, and 2021 Finalist for Most Outstanding Paper in the Journal of Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education.
