Dr Ho Loon Shin serves as Lecturer in General Practice at the Clinical School of Johor Baru, Monash University Malaysia, in the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, since 2012. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, in 1979. After completing compulsory government service at Kuching General Hospital, Limbang Hospital, and Johor Bahru General Hospital, he practiced as a general practitioner in Kulai from 1983 to 2009, tutoring University of Malaya students concurrently. A certified professional trainer by the Malaysian Institute of Management, he has made significant humanitarian contributions, including establishing a non-profit haemodialysis centre in Kulai in 1996 for the poor, funding literacy initiatives with computers and books for rural schools in Indonesia, Thailand, and Johor, supporting water and sanitation projects in Laos, Thailand, and Indonesia, and participating in a medical mission following the 2009 Chile earthquake. For these efforts, he received the Rotary International ‘Service Above Self’ award in 2009.
His research focuses on metabolic syndrome among Orang Asli in Johor Baru and Belum, and Vitamin E tocopherols and tocotrienols in relation to diabetes and metabolic syndrome in Malaysian ethnic communities. Notable publications include: Koay et al. (2021) on tocotrienol-rich vitamin E effects on diabetic kidney disease in Nutrients; Venggadasamy et al. (2021) reviewing sexual dysfunction in Asian males with type 2 diabetes in Progress in Microbes and Molecular Biology; Chuar et al. (2021) on Tocovid improving nerve conduction in diabetic patients in Nutrients; Iqbal et al. (2020) on sociodemographic factors and metabolic syndrome in PLoS ONE; and Chua et al. (2020) on Vitamin E levels and glucose tolerance in Nutrients. At Monash, he teaches clinical communication skills, patient-centred care in family medicine, and facilitates Problem-Based Learning in Surgery. He is Chief Investigator on a clinical trial investigating tocotrienol-rich vitamin E for diabetic microvascular complications.
