Lovreet Shergill is an Assistant Professor of Weed Science in the Southern Agricultural Research Center at Montana State University. With a robust academic foundation, he earned his B.Sc. in Agriculture (Honors) from Guru Nanak Dev University (2003-2007), M.Sc. in Agronomy from Punjab Agricultural University (2007-2010), and Ph.D. in Weed Science from The University of Adelaide (2012-2016). His postdoctoral research at the University of Missouri (2016-2018) and the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville (2018-2020) honed his expertise in weed dynamics and herbicide resistance mechanisms before joining MSU in 2020, where he leads the Weed Science Lab dedicated to advancing weed management practices.
Dr. Shergill's research specializations encompass weed biology, ecology, physiology, herbicide resistance, and integrated weed management strategies tailored to North American cropping systems. His work addresses critical challenges such as managing herbicide-resistant weeds like waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) and promoting sustainable practices including harvest weed seed control (HWSC) and precision herbicide application. Notable publications include: "Investigations of 2,4-D and multiple herbicide resistance in a Missouri waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) population" (Weed Science, 2018, 96 citations); "Molecular and physiological characterization of six-way resistance in an Amaranthus tuberculatus var. rudis biotype from Missouri" (Pest Management Science, 2018, 55 citations); "Current outlook and future research needs for harvest weed seed control in North American cropping systems" (Pest Management Science, 2020, 49 citations); "Seed-shattering phenology at soybean harvest of economically important weeds in multiple regions of the United States. Part 1: Broadleaf species" (Weed Science, 2021, 45 citations); and "Integration of residual herbicides with cover crop termination in soybean" (Weed Technology, 2020, 44 citations). At MSU, he co-authored the extension publication "Waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus): Biology, Identification, and Management" and has presented on topics like herbicide-resistant weeds at field days and webinars, including collaborations with MSU Extension on invasive pigweeds. Dr. Shergill advises graduate students, such as those in Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, and contributes to regional efforts in sustainable agriculture.
