Dr. Magdy Elnashar serves as a Senior Lecturer and Unit Coordinator at Curtin University within the Faculty of Health Sciences, associated with the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and Curtin Medical School. He earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, in 2005, along with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from Cairo University, Egypt. As a chartered chemist, biochemist, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Elnashar brings managerial, teaching, and research expertise to his role. Prior to his current position, he was Program Manager of Health Sciences at Curtin College and has coordinated and taught more than 12 units at Curtin University over the past decade.
Elnashar's academic interests center on biochemistry, nanobiotechnology, enzyme immobilization using biomaterials, biopolymers, biocomposites, and biotechnological applications in healthcare, water purification, cancer treatment, pharmaceuticals, and food industries. Notable works include editing the book Biopolymers (IntechOpen, 2010), and publications such as Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology (2010), Biotechnology of Biopolymers (2011), Lactose hydrolysis by β-galactosidase covalently immobilized to thermally stable biopolymers (2009), Immobilized inulinase on grafted alginate beads prepared by the one-step and the two-steps methods (2010), Covalent immobilization of microbial naringinase using novel thermally stable biopolymer for hydrolysis of naringin (2016), Decoding the secrets of small extracellular vesicle communications: exploring the inhibition of vesicle-associated pathways and interception strategies for cancer treatment (2024), and Silver Gelled Chitosan Films: Preparation, Inclusion of Sunflower Seed Oil, and Application in Bread Packaging (2025). His research has accumulated over 1,000 citations. In teaching, he pioneered FastFeedback Questions (FFQs), a rapid formative feedback method published in 2018, which integrates focus questions into lectures to boost student engagement and mastery. Elnashar has received 11 prestigious awards, including the 2018 Curtin Awards for Excellence in Innovation and Teaching, as well as national recognition in Australia and honors from the USA, UK, and Egypt for teaching, research, and commercialization.
