Dr Liyaning Maggie Tang serves as a Senior Lecturer in Construction Management within the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle, part of the College of Engineering, Science and Environment. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and her Bachelor of Engineering from Tsinghua University in PR China. Her academic career includes a postdoctoral research position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a three-year lectureship at West Virginia University in the United States. During these appointments, she collaborated with government departments in China and the US on projects involving public-private partnerships, highway pavement construction, dust control on construction sites, environmental impact assessments, and carbon footprint analysis in construction. Currently, she teaches construction courses, supervises undergraduate and graduate students as a registered Principal Supervisor for doctorates, and serves as a World Bank Group/APMG Certified PPP Professional Foundation trainer.
Tang's research interests include big data analytics, building energy management, modular construction, construction waste management, occupational health and safety, public-private partnerships, and women in construction. She has secured $1,424,927 in funding across 13 grants, including lead investigator roles in 'Developing a Health and Safety Maturity Framework for Small Construction Businesses' funded by the NSW Department of Customer Service ($48,596, 2023-2024) and 'Ageing in nursing and construction' ($47,624, 2021-2022), as well as investigator on a $620,000 project from Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd (2023-2026) examining technological interventions for safety behavior. Key publications encompass chapters such as 'Adaptive Flood Risk Management for Sustainable Development: A Case Study from Australia’s Hunter Region' (2026), 'Analysis of Safety and Well-Being Factors Related to the Ageing Construction Workforce' (2025), 'Mental Health Issues in the Culturally Diverse Construction Workplace: A Literature Review' (2021), and conference papers including 'Identifying Barriers & Enablers to Improve WHS Outcomes in Australian Small Construction Businesses' (2025) and 'Labor Sentiment Analysis for the Construction Industry: A Case Study of Twitter in the USA' (2017). Her honors include Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2020), membership in CIB (2020), Associate Membership of the Australian Institute of Building (2021), and Certified PPP Professional (2019). Tang promotes multidisciplinary collaboration to improve mental health, sustainable infrastructure through sentiment analysis, gender equality, disaster waste management, and construction sustainability.
