Marc Grimmett is a Professor of Counselor Education in the College of Education at North Carolina State University, serving in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development. He holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia, a Master of Arts in Community Counseling from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of South Carolina Counseling and Human Development Center focusing on marriage and family therapy, substance abuse treatment, sexual trauma, and crisis intervention. A licensed psychologist (Health Services Provider-Psychologist #3145 in North Carolina) with over 23 years of experience, Grimmett has provided mental health services to children, adolescents, adults, and families in diverse settings including group homes, public schools, university counseling centers, community mental health centers, substance abuse treatment and homeless shelters, in-home counseling, and private practice. At NC State, he founded and directs the Community Counseling, Education, and Research Center (CCERC), promoting multicultural and social justice counselor education through engagement scholarship.
Grimmett's academic interests center on counselor education, multicultural counseling, social justice advocacy, clinical mental health counseling, and sexual violence prevention. He developed the R.A.D.I.C.A.L. scholarship framework for research action to deconstruct institutionalized cultures and advocate for liberation, and serves as program coordinator for Counselor Education, overseeing CACREP-accredited programs in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling. Notable publications include 'A Thematic Analysis of the Impact of MY MASCULINITY HELPS as a Tool for Sexual Violence Prevention' (Journal of Interpersonal Violence), 'The Community Counseling, Education, and Research Center (CCERC) model: Addressing community mental health needs through engagement scholarship' (2018), 'Examining the Use of Digital Storytelling and Immersion in a Multicultural Counseling Course,' 'A Community Counseling Center Model for Multicultural and Social Justice Counselor Education' (2017), and 'Professional Identity Scale in Counseling (PISC): Instrument Development and Validation' (2015). He is executive producer and co-director of the documentary MY MASCULINITY HELPS. Grimmett teaches courses such as Foundations of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Cross-Cultural Counseling, Gender Issues in Counseling, and Advanced Multicultural Counseling, Advocacy, and Activism. His impact is evidenced by awards including the North Carolina State University College of Education Outstanding Extension Service Award (2018), University of Georgia Outstanding Educator Award (2018), and Outstanding Faculty Award from NC State's African American Cultural Center at the Ebony Harlem Awards of Excellence (2021).
