Great Professor!
Seng Giap Marcus Ang conducted his doctoral research as a higher degree research student in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Health and Medicine at the University of Newcastle. He was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in 2020 for the thesis titled 'Identifying carers' concern for older people at risk of falling at home,' supervised by Anthony Paul O'Brien and Amanda Wilson from the same school. Prior to this, Ang earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Second Class Honours (Lower) from the National University of Singapore in 2012. After graduation, he practiced as a registered nurse in medical-surgical wards, neuroscience intensive care units, and nursing research departments in Singapore, gaining clinical expertise relevant to his later academic pursuits in geriatric care and family caregiving.
Ang's research focuses on falls and fall prevention among older people, family carers' concerns and management strategies for fall risks at home, psychological impacts on carers, mixed-methods approaches, and implementation science in nursing. His key publications affiliated with the University of Newcastle include 'Understanding carers’ fall concern and their management of fall risk among older people at home' (BMC Geriatrics, 2019), 'Carers’ concern for older people falling at home: an integrative review' (Singapore Medical Journal, 2020), 'Patients' experience after a fall and their perceptions of fall prevention: a qualitative study' (Journal of Nursing Care Quality, 2018), 'Investigating the psychometric properties of the Carers’ Fall Concern instrument to measure carers’ concern for older people at risk of falling at home: A cross-sectional study' (International Journal of Older People Nursing, 2020), and 'Carers’ concerns about their older persons (Carees) at risk of falling – a mixed-methods study protocol' (BMC Health Services Research, 2018). During his studies, he earned awards such as Best Higher Degree Research presentation in Older Person Care (Newcastle, 2019), Best International Higher Degree Research oral presentation (Newcastle, 2017), and Australian Government Research Training Programme Scholarship (2016). His work has informed geriatric nursing practices by highlighting carers' roles in home-based fall prevention. Subsequently, Ang became Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University.
