Mareike Barton serves as Collection Assistant (Access) in the Collection Access & Discovery team within the Digital and Collections division of the University of Otago Library. In 2019, Mareike Barton won first place in the Staff Prose category of the University of Otago's inaugural creative writing competition for staff and students, "Writer". The event drew 71 entries and was judged by New Zealand author Fiona Farrell under the theme of the university motto "Sapere Aude" (Dare to be Wise). Her story "The Evening Shift", told from a cleaner's perspective, was published in the Otago Daily Times on October 7, 2019, and on the University of Otago 150th anniversary website. She attended the prize-giving at the University Staff Club with other winners and guest Val McDermid, Visiting Professor of Scottish Studies and Crime Fiction. Barton has also contributed to university initiatives, including postering for the New Zealand Tertiary Education Union's "Secure Work Better Futures" campaign across Aotearoa, and signed an open letter in March 2019 from academics, researchers, educators, and library staff supporting the School Strike 4 Climate, listed under University of Otago Library.
