Maria Crowe, Ph.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences within Marquette University’s College of Health Sciences. Renowned for her expertise in health science education, she obtained her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., in 1984. Dr. Crowe earned her Ph.D. from the Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy Department at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1992, with doctoral studies focused on the heterogeneity of the olfactory neuroepithelium. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, from 1992 to 1995, investigating neurotrauma of the spinal cord under the direction of Drs. Michael Beattie and Jacqueline Bresnahan.
After her postdoctoral training, Dr. Crowe served as a Research Scientist at the Shriners Burns Hospital for Children in Cincinnati, where she conducted studies on the molecular biology of wound healing until 1999. From 2000 to 2011, she was a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, directing research on the neurobiology of traumatic injury to the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Crowe joined Marquette University in 2000 as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and has since advanced to Clinical Associate Professor. She teaches several foundational courses, including BISC 1015: Anatomy and Physiology, BISC 2015/2016: Anatomy and Physiology for the Exercise Sciences, BISC 3112: Head and Neck Gross Anatomy, and BISC 7515: Dental School Neurocranial Anatomy. Additionally, she holds the position of Program Director for the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences, serves as an undergraduate academic advisor, and is a member of the Disciplinary Honors Committee in Biomedical Sciences, fostering academic excellence and research opportunities for students in health science fields.
