About Marie

Marie Auger-Méthé is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics and the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia, where she holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Statistical Ecology. She earned a BSc Honours and an MSc from Dalhousie University, followed by a PhD from the University of Alberta. Prior to her appointment at UBC, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on developing and applying statistical tools to infer behavioural and population processes from empirical data, with particular emphasis on modelling animal movement and space use in marine and polar species such as narwhals and polar bears. These methods support broader applications in ecology and contribute to the conservation and management of marine and polar ecosystems. She also serves as an Associate Member in the Department of Zoology at UBC and holds associate editor positions with the Journal of Animal Ecology and Methods in Ecology & Evolution.

Auger-Méthé teaches courses including STAT 300 Intermediate Statistics for Applications and FISH 506H/STAT 547N Statistics in Ecology and Marine Sciences. She received the Canada Research Chair in 2018, with renewal in 2023. In 2024, she was elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. Her collaborative work on hidden Markov models earned the 2023 Canadian Journal of Statistics Award. Additional recognitions include the Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship and selection as a Science Meets Parliament delegate. Her professional email address is auger-methe@stat.ubc.ca.
