Marimuthu Palaniswami is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering within the Melbourne School of Engineering at the University of Melbourne. He obtained his B.E. (Hons) from the University of Madras, M.Eng.Sc. from the University of Melbourne, and Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle, Australia. After completing his doctorate, he joined the University of Melbourne, advancing to his current professorial position. Palaniswami serves as Network Convener and Director of the ARC Research Network on Intelligent Sensors, Sensor Networks and Information Processing (ISSNIP).
A Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), he is an internationally recognized expert in Internet of Things (IoT), machine intelligence, support vector machines, neural networks, control, signal processing, pattern recognition, and smart grids. His research also includes cardiovascular signal processing and modelling. Palaniswami has received the University of Melbourne Knowledge Transfer Excellence Award and commendation awards, as well as a Foreign Specialist Award from the Ministry of Education, Japan. He is a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. His scholarly impact is evidenced by over 44,800 citations on Google Scholar. Notable publications include the seminal paper 'Internet of Things (IoT): A vision, architectural elements, and future directions' (2013), co-authored with Jayavardhana Gubbi, Slaven Marusic, and Rajkumar Buyya. He has edited books such as 'Healthcare Sensor Networks: Challenges Toward Practical Implementation' (2012) and 'Computational Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering' (2006), alongside hundreds of journal articles and conference papers on sensor networks, machine learning, and biomedical signal analysis.
