Mark Drury is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Otago. He holds a Bachelor of Physical Education (BPhEd) from the University of Otago and a Master's in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Edinburgh. As part of the academic staff, Drury contributes to teaching in sport and exercise sciences, focusing on practical applications in physical preparation.
Drury coordinates the Advanced Physical Preparation for Sports Performance module within the SPEX451 Advanced Topics in Exercise and Sport Science course. This full-year 10-point course requires coordinator approval and is structured around intensive delivery: two days in Semester One and two days in Semester Two, complemented by individual Zoom sessions. It incorporates lectures, discussion groups, and hands-on practical sessions, with students expected to review essential readings and resources beforehand. The module aligns directly with the Sports and Exercise Science New Zealand (SESNZ) Level 2 Strength and Conditioning accreditation standards, allowing eligible students to pursue certification upon completion. Participants must have prior knowledge equivalent to SPEX305. Drury's involvement underscores his expertise in strength and conditioning, as evidenced by his postgraduate qualification and role in delivering content that prepares students for professional accreditation in the field.
