Great Professor!
Associate Professor Mark Louie-Johnsun serves in the Discipline of Surgery at the University of Newcastle, Australia, within the Faculty of Health and Medicine. He graduated with honours from the University of New South Wales, completed three years of advanced general surgical training prior to urological training, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He received the Board of Urology Travelling Fellowship Award and underwent fellowship training in the United Kingdom under a leading expert in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Since 2009, he has practiced as a urological surgeon on the Central Coast of New South Wales, conducting operations at Gosford Hospital, Wyong Hospital, Gosford Private Hospital, and formerly Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital. He has performed over 1500 major advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgeries for prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers. In his academic role, he acts as Supervisor of Training for Urology on the Central Coast, contributing to the education of future urological surgeons, junior medical officers, and medical students.
Louie-Johnsun's academic interests focus on urological oncology, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, and prostate cancer management, including multiparametric MRI accuracy, biopsy techniques, infection rates, and active surveillance outcomes. His peer-reviewed publications include 'Quantifying the Effect of Location Matching on Accuracy of Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging Prior to Prostate Biopsy—A Multicentre Study' (2020), 'Does magnetic resonance imaging-guided biopsy improve prostate cancer detection? A comparison of systematic, cognitive fusion and ultrasound fusion prostate biopsy' (2017), 'Management and outcomes of Gleason six prostate cancer detected on needle biopsy: a single-surgeon experience over 6 years' (2017), and lead authorship in analyses of large multicentre Australian laparoscopic radical prostatectomy series. Cited over 500 times, his research has impacted clinical practices. Since 2014, he has served as Principal Investigator for the Central Coast in the NSW Prostate Clinical Cancer Registry. He reviews for field journals, instructs advanced laparoscopic skills workshops, and has presented at state, national, and international conferences such as the European Association of Urology. From 2007 to 2009, he coordinated a medical outreach project to Vietnam with Australian urologists, and since 2023, he has been the Urology Craft Group Representative for the Gosford Private Hospital Medical Advisory Committee.
