Mark Roxburgh is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences, College of Human and Social Futures, at the University of Newcastle. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Canberra, a Master of Arts (Communication and Cultural Studies) from the University of Western Sydney, a Graduate Diploma of Arts in Visual Arts from the New South Wales Institute of the Arts, and a Bachelor of Arts from the Sydney College of Advanced Education. His professional career includes serving as Associate Professor of Design at the University of Newcastle since 2014, Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication at the University of Technology Sydney (2005-2011) where he was also Director of Program (2001-2005), and multiple roles at the University of Western Sydney including Lecturer in Photomedia (1992-1993), Photomedia Coordinator (1994-1996), Course Coordinator (1997), and Offshore Course Coordinator (1998-1999) for Visual Communication.
Roxburgh's research specializations encompass visual communication design, design history, theory and criticism, design practice and methods, abstraction, creativity, design research, photography, visual communication, visualisation, user experience, co-design, and aesthetics of research. Key publications feature the co-authored book The Elephant’s Leg: Adventures in the Creative Industries (2021), journal articles including Destroy All Humans: The Dematerialisation of the Designer in an Age of Automation and its Impact on Graphic Design—A Literature Review (2023, with B. Matthews and B. Shannon), Assessing Anatomy Education: A Perspective from Design (2021, with D. J. R. Evans), and Co-design in mHealth systems development: Insights from a systematic literature review (2021, with T. J. Noorbergen et al.), as well as numerous book chapters, conference papers, and creative works such as Making it Known (2015). He has received the Work Integrated Learning Academic Staff Member of the Year award (Faculty of Science and Information Technology, University of Newcastle, 2015) and Work Integrated Learning recognition (2012). Roxburgh also served on the conference committee for Cumulus 2015.
