About Mark

Professor Mark Scott AO is the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sydney, a role he has held since July 2021, with a second five-year term commencing in July 2026. A proud alumnus of the University, he holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Diploma of Education, a Master of Arts in Political Science and Government, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Sydney, along with a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He has also received honorary doctorates from the University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney, and holds the title of Professor of Practice in Education and Media from the University of Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Royal Society of New South Wales, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2011.

Professor Scott brings extensive leadership experience from public service, education, and media to his current position. He previously served as Secretary of the NSW Department of Education from 2016 to 2021, where he secured a record 10-year funding agreement for public schools and established initiatives including School Infrastructure NSW and the School Leadership Institute. From 2006 to 2016, he was Managing Director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, overseeing its digital transformation with new services such as iview, ABC News 24, and expanded online and mobile offerings. Earlier in his career, he held senior editorial roles at Fairfax Media, including Education Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and Editor-in-Chief of metropolitan, regional, and community newspapers, and began as a teacher in Sydney. He has chaired the Group of Eight universities, the Conversation Media Group board, and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government Academic Board, and led the Australian Government’s Teacher Education Expert Panel from 2022 to 2023. Under his leadership, the University has advanced a 10-year strategy focused on expanding scholarships and investing in biomedical infrastructure.
