Markus Jochum is Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, in the Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth section. He earned a BSc in Physics from the University of Saarbruecken in 1993, an MSc in Physical Oceanography from IfM Kiel in 1997, and a PhD in Physical Oceanography from MIT in 2002, for which he received the Rossby Award for best thesis. Prior to his appointment at the University of Copenhagen in 2012, he served as Scientist I-III at the National Center for Atmospheric Research from 2005 to 2011 and held research scientist and postdoc positions at MIT.
Jochum’s research focuses on physical oceanography and climate dynamics, including ocean modeling, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, ENSO, and related processes. He has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and collaborative projects in these areas. His professional service includes membership on CLIVAR panels and working groups, the NASA SST panel, and serving as associate editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research. He has also advised graduate students and participated in observational field campaigns.
