Professor Markus Seibel holds the Chair in Endocrinology at the University of Sydney and serves as Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, affiliated with the Concord Clinical School. He earned his MD and PhD from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, completing his PhD in 1997, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). As the Inaugural Director of the Bone Research Program at the ANZAC Research Institute, he leads research initiatives focused on bone biology, osteoporosis, bone cancer, and musculoskeletal medicine. Professor Seibel has been recognized as an international leader in musculoskeletal medicine for over 25 years, with contributions spanning basic, translational, and clinical research.
His academic career at the University of Sydney includes significant appointments since at least 2006, including roles in Sydney Medical School at Concord Campus. Professor Seibel's research outputs encompass hundreds of publications, including key papers such as 'Vitamin D Deficiency Promotes Human Breast Cancer Growth in a Murine Model of Bone Metastasis' (2010), 'Osteoblasts mediate the adverse effects of glucocorticoids on fuel metabolism' (2012), 'The role of the bone microenvironment in skeletal metastasis' (2012), 'Use of Bone Turnover Markers in the Real World: Are We There Yet?' (2009), and 'Circadian Rhythms, Endogenous Glucocorticoids and Skeletal Health' (2024). He has received major honors, including election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (FAHMS) and appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Professor Seibel serves on editorial boards, such as for Scientific Research Publishing, and has secured funded research grants through university channels. His work has advanced understanding of glucocorticoid signaling in bone, skeletal metastasis mechanisms, and bone turnover markers in clinical practice.
