About Martin

Scientia Professor Martin Green is a professor in the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering at the University of New South Wales. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Engineering from the University of Queensland and a PhD from McMaster University. In 1974, he established the Solar Photovoltaics Group at UNSW and serves as founding Director of the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics. His research focuses on silicon solar cells and photovoltaics, with contributions including the development of the Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) technology in 1983 and earlier work on tunnel oxide passivated contacts (TOPCon). These technologies now underpin the majority of global silicon solar module production.

Green has received numerous awards, including the Australia Prize in 1999, the Right Livelihood Award in 2002, the Japan Prize in 2021, the Millennium Technology Prize in 2022, and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in 2023 (shared with colleagues). He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and the Royal Society. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Progress in Photovoltaics and has supervised over 120 PhD students, several of whom have founded major solar manufacturing companies. His group has held multiple world records for silicon solar cell efficiency.
