Professor Masaya Nakamura is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Keio University School of Medicine. He graduated from the Keio University School of Medicine in 1987 and earned his MD and PhD from the same institution. His career at Keio includes positions in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, followed by a research fellowship at Georgetown University in the United States. He advanced to assistant professor in 2000, associate professor, and full professor in 2015. He has also served as associate dean and vice dean of the Keio University School of Medicine, with responsibilities including industry-academia collaboration and innovation.
Professor Nakamura’s research focuses on regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal disorders, particularly spinal cord injury, using iPS cell-based therapies, hepatocyte growth factors, and suppression of axonal growth inhibitors. He collaborates on multicenter studies of spine and spinal cord disorders and develops new assessment methods using MRI and CT. His work has contributed to clinical trials in spinal cord regenerative medicine. He has received awards including the Japanese Orthopaedic Association’s Academic Encouragement Award, the Baelz Prize, and the Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine Award. He leads research teams and participates in public announcements regarding advances in iPS cell applications for spinal cord injury treatment.
