Mathews Thomas is a Lecturer in the Department of Business Law and Taxation within the Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales, and a Master of Laws from Monash University. Prior to his current role, Thomas held the position of Head of School at the School of Economics, University of London Programme at Stamford College. He also served as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of New South Wales. Thomas joined the Malaysian Campus of Monash University's Department of Business Law and Taxation in 1998 as a Lecturer and Department Coordinator. He transferred to the Clayton Campus in 2005 and is currently based at the Caulfield Campus. He contributes to various research groups, including the Asia-Pacific Business Regulation Group and the International Trade and International Commercial Law Research Group.
Thomas's academic interests and research specializations include comparative law, legal transfers, economic regulations, e-commerce law, personal data protection, international trade law, and medical negligence. His key publications feature "Is Malaysia's MyKad the 'one card to rule them all'? the urgent need to develop a proper legal framework for the protection of personal information in Malaysia" published in the Melbourne University Law Review in 2004, and "Rogers v. Whitaker lands on Malaysian shores - Is there now a patient's right to know in Malaysia?" in the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies in 2009. Thomas has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to teaching and research with several awards: the Monash University Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Team-based Educational Development in 2003; the Dean's Teaching Award for Excellence from the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2004; the Monash University Student Association's Lecturer of the Year Award in 2003 and 2004; the Business Law and Taxation Team Teaching Award in 2009; and the Dean's Commendation for Research Excellence from the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2007. He teaches courses such as International Trade Law (BTX3110) and Law and Commercial Decisions (BTC5904).
