About Matthew

Matthew Child is an Associate Professor in the Department of Life Sciences within the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Imperial College London. He holds a BSc (Hons) and a PhD in molecular parasitology, which he completed under the supervision of Prof. Mike Blackman at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook postdoctoral research at Stanford University School of Medicine and served as a Visiting Scientist at The Francis Crick Institute.

Child founded the Child Lab in 2016, where his research focuses on functional chemo-proteo-genomics. The lab investigates how individual amino acids contribute to protein function in live cells, rare diseases, and infections by pathogens, employing techniques such as in vivo phenotypic screening, antimicrobial discovery, chemical probe development, and proteome engineering. His work addresses topics including the interpretation of reactive oxygen species by Toxoplasma, therapeutic targets with covalent inhibitors, host-pathogen studies, and prioritization of electrophile-sensitive amino acids. Child is a Principal Investigator and has held the position of Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College London. He is an elected member of the Royal Society of Biology and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was appointed Associate Professor (tenured) in October 2024.
