Dr Matthew Mason serves as Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Academic Lead for Work Integrated Learning within the School of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC). Additionally, he contributes as a researcher to the Australian Centre for Pacific Islands Research. His academic background encompasses a Master of Rural Health from Monash University, a Master of Advanced Practice in Infection Control from Griffith University, a Bachelor of Nursing Science from Monash University, and a Graduate Diploma in Remote Health from Flinders University. These qualifications underpin his expertise in delivering accessible and safe health services, particularly in resource-challenged environments.
Mason's research specializations include infection prevention and control in resource-limited settings, vascular access, pop culture pedagogy for health education, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, health curriculum, and pedagogy. His academic interests also cover infectious diseases, emergency management, and clinical governance. Key publications include "Barriers and facilitators to COVID-19 vaccine uptake among Australian health professional students during the pandemic: a nationwide study" (2023), "Towards a framework for a collaborative support model to assist infection prevention and control programmes in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review" (2023), and "‘Speaking up for safety’: A graded assertiveness intervention for first year nursing students in preparation for clinical placement: Thematic analysis" (2020). He received the Vice-Chancellor and President's Diversity and Inclusion Award from UniSC in 2019.
Mason holds prominent roles as Technical Adviser to the WHO Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, Executive Member and IPC lead for the Pacific Region Infectious Disease Association, and Co-Director of the Collaborative for the Advancement of Infection Prevention and Control across the Western Pacific. He possesses expert-level credentials from the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control and maintains an extensive network in the Western Pacific Region to improve health care outcomes for communities and staff.
