Matti Mäntysalo is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Head of the Tampere Electronics Research Centre at Tampere University, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. He holds the position of Professor in Printed Electronics at the Laboratory for Future Electronics. Mäntysalo obtained his Doctor of Science in Technology (D.Sc. Tech.) degree in electrical engineering from Tampere University of Technology in 2008. His professional career includes an appointment as Academy of Finland Research Fellow from 2015 to 2020. He leads research efforts focused on printed flexible and stretchable electronics, on-skin electronics, printed sensors, and the integration of microelectronics and printed electronics through hybrid printed electronics approaches.
Mäntysalo has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, advancing the development of energy-efficient and sustainable electronic systems, including printable supercapacitors and wearable technologies. Key publications include 'A health-IoT platform based on the integration of intelligent packaging, unobtrusive bio-sensor, and intelligent medicine box' published in 2014 with 923 citations; 'Inkjet-printed graphene/PEDOT:PSS temperature sensors on a skin-conformable polyurethane substrate' in 2016 with 404 citations; 'Screen-Printing Fabrication and Characterization of Silver Traces on Low-Temperature and Flexible Substrates' also in 2016 with 253 citations; 'Inkjet Printable Polydimethylsiloxane for All-Inkjet-Printed Stretchable Electronics' in 2020 with 95 citations; and 'Screen printed monolithic supercapacitor with talc and vermiculite additives for energy storage applications' in 2024. He received the Academy Research Fellow Grant from the Academy of Finland and recognition from Nokia Research Center for pioneering work on the first inkjet printed inductor. Mäntysalo contributes to doctoral training and international projects, such as coordinating WP8 in the ARMS project and hosting MSCA postdoctoral fellows.
