Michael Daniels serves as Professor, Chair, and Andrew Banks Family Endowed Chair in the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. He received his A.B. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University in 1991 (magna cum laude) and his Sc.D. in Biostatistics from Harvard University in 1995, with a thesis titled Hierarchical Regression Models with Applications. His academic career began as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University from 1995 to 1997, followed by Assistant Professor at Iowa State University from 1997 to 2002. He joined the University of Florida in 2002 as Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Department of Statistics, advancing to Professor in 2007. He held roles including Chief of the Division of Biostatistics, Interim Chair, and Chair of the Department of Statistics at UF multiple times between 2005 and 2017. From 2012 to 2017, he served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Statistics & Data Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin before returning to his current position at UF in 2017.
Daniels specializes in biostatistics, with research interests in Bayesian methodology, methods for incomplete longitudinal data, and causal inference. He co-authored two books: Missing Data in Longitudinal Studies: Strategies for Bayesian Modeling and Sensitivity Analysis (2008, Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, with J.W. Hogan) and Bayesian Nonparametric Approaches for Causal Inference and Missing Data (2023, Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, with A.R. Linero and J. Roy). Key publications include Meta-Analysis for the Evaluation of Potential Surrogate Markers (1997, Statistics in Medicine, with M. Hughes), A Flexible Bayesian Approach to Monotone Missing Data in Longitudinal Studies with Informative Missingness (2015, Journal of the American Statistical Association, with A.R. Linero), and Bayesian Methods for Multiple Mediators: Principal Stratification and Causal Mediation Analysis (2019, Annals of Applied Statistics, with C. Kim et al.). He has received the Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2007), Lagakos Distinguished Alumni Award from Harvard (2014), Honorable Mention for the Mitchell Prize from ISBA (2020), and L. Adrienne Cupples Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service in Biostatistics (2022). Daniels has advised over 20 PhD students to completion, many in prominent academic and industry positions, and held editorial roles such as Co-Editor of Biometrics (2015-2018), Associate Editor for multiple journals, and leadership in statistical societies including President of the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometrics Society (2020).
