Professor Michael Dooley is Professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, with a joint appointment as Director of Pharmacy at Alfred Health. A Monash alumnus, he graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1986, completed his internship at Box Hill Hospital, and registered as a pharmacist in 1987. Dooley's career trajectory includes early roles in cardiology and oncology, culminating in his position as Senior Oncology Pharmacist and subsequent Director of Pharmacy at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre from 1998. He assumed the role of Director of Pharmacy at Alfred Health in 2005. Within Monash University, he advanced from Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy Practice to Inaugural Chair of Clinical Pharmacy, and co-founded the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, which bridges academic research and practical applications in medicine use across diverse care settings including hospitals, homes, and aged care.
Dooley's research focuses on innovative clinical pharmacy practice models, quality use of medicines, medication management for the elderly and those with renal impairment, medication safety improvement strategies, and acute healthcare medication usage. With 208 research outputs, notable recent publications include "Clinical pharmacy services supporting patient care" (Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research, 2024), "Pharmacists in Trauma: a randomised controlled trial of emergency medicine pharmacists in trauma response teams" (Emergency Medicine Journal, 2024), "Implementation of Partnered Pharmacist Medication Charting in haematology and oncology inpatients" (Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice, 2024), and "Influence of Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use on Older Australians’ Admission to Emergency Department Short Stay" (Geriatrics, 2024). He has received the MJA, MDA National Prize for Excellence in Medical Research (2018), Sir Richard Stawell Memorial Prize (2017), and 2022 Fred J Boyd Award. As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research, former President of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia, and member of key national committees such as the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care Medication Reference Group, Dooley significantly influences pharmacy practice and policy.
