Emeritus Professor Michael Hensley is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney. His research expertise includes respiratory and sleep medicine, evidence-based medicine, respiratory epidemiology, the impact of indoor and outdoor environments on lung health, and occupational and environmental lung disease. He has previously served as Dean of Medicine for the Joint Medical Program of the University of Newcastle and the University of New England, and as Head of the School of Medicine and Public Health.
Professor Hensley maintains an extensive academic output, with over 213 journal articles, 41 conference papers, and one book chapter in Evidence-based Respiratory Medicine (2005). Prominent publications feature the chapter 'The Treatment of the Obstructive Sleep Apnoea-Hypopnoea Syndrome' (2007), a randomized controlled trial on FENO-guided asthma management in pregnancy that reduced exacerbations (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2011), evaluation of CPAP effectiveness in moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnoea (2009), and analysis of passive smoking's influence on airway inflammation in asthmatic children (2008). He contributed to Cochrane reviews on limited patient education for asthma (2002), self-management education and practitioner review for asthma (2000), and lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema (2006). Securing 39 grants totaling $6,503,654, including NHMRC Partnership Projects and key initiatives like the Breathing for Life Trial ($1,722,020, 2014), Managing Asthma in Pregnancy ($805,875, 2007), persistent airway obstruction post-virus infection ($400,250, 2004), and the Centre of Research Excellence for Respiratory and Sleep Medicine ($366,110, 2005), Professor Hensley has supervised six PhD and Masters completions. His contributions extend to the Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs, advancing respiratory care for at-risk groups including pregnant women and children.
