About Michael

Michael Rosenzweig is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at The University of Arizona, serving in Biology since 1975. He earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. His career includes Assistant Professor of Biology at Bucknell University (1965-1969), Visiting Assistant Professor at Cranberry Lake Biological Station and Assistant Professor at SUNY-Albany (1969-1971), Associate Professor of Biology at the University of New Mexico (1971-1975), and visiting positions such as Professor of Biology at Ben-Gurion University (1981-1982), University of Wisconsin (1990-1991), University of Miami (1996-1997), and others. Rosenzweig received the University of Arizona College of Science Career Teaching Award in 2001 and Outstanding Teaching Award in 1985.

Rosenzweig combines ecology, evolution, and mathematical theory in his research on species diversity, desert mammal ecology, optimal density-dependent habitat selection, and predation dynamics. He developed isocline theory for habitat selection, linking behavior, population dynamics, and community organization, and a mathematical theory of species diversity from speciation-extinction differential equations with area as a key variable explaining tropical richness. He studies environmental issues using species-area curves for censusing and health assessment. Key publications include books "And Replenish the Earth" (1974), identifying natural selection as a threat to human population bounds; "Species Diversity in Space and Time" (1995), an advanced text; and "Win-Win Ecology: How the Earth's Species Can Survive in the Midst of Human Enterprise" (2003), promoting reconciliation ecology. Honors include Ecological Society of America Eminent Ecologist Award (2008), International Ecological Society Distinguished Statistical Ecologist (1998), and distinguished lectureships like Dennis Chitty Lecturer at University of British Columbia (1995-1996) and Eminent Ecologist at Michigan State University Kellogg Biological Station (1992). He founded Evolutionary Ecology Research as publisher and editor-in-chief, edited for Ecological Society of America since 1977, Paleobiology (1983-1986), Israel Journal of Zoology since 1993, and served on National Academy of Sciences committees for environmental indicators (2000) and grand challenges in environmental science (2001).
