Professor Michael Rudolph is a professor at the University of Johannesburg, where he serves as Director of the Centre for Ecological Intelligence in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. He has held this directorship since 2019. Prior to his role at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Rudolph was professor of community dentistry at the University of the Witwatersrand and director of the Wits Siyakhana Initiative from 2010 to 2017.
His research focuses on food and nutrition security, public health, community initiatives, food systems, precision agriculture, climate change, and agribusiness. He has authored or co-authored publications including work on sustainable social entrepreneurship models for urban agribusiness initiatives in Johannesburg and food security in urban cities with a case study in Johannesburg, South Africa. Professor Rudolph has delivered public lectures, including a TEDx talk on food gardens as change agents. He is recognized as an authority in the food and nutrition security space with over 15 years of focused work in the area and broader academic experience spanning more than 40 years as an educator, researcher, and academic supervisor.
