Professor Naresh Kumar is Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Senior Consultant at the University Spine Centre, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National University Hospital. He holds qualifications including MBBS and MS Orthopaedics from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), DNB Orthopaedics, FRCS Edin, FRCS (Orth & Trauma), and DM in Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery from the University of Nottingham. His career includes training and practice in the United Kingdom at institutions such as the University of Birmingham, New Cross Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham, St. James Hospital Leeds, and in the United States at Harborview Medical Centre Seattle, before joining the National University Hospital in Singapore where he has served as a senior consultant spinal surgeon since 2007.
Professor Kumar’s clinical and research focus centres on spine surgery, with particular expertise in metastatic spine disease, degenerative spinal conditions, spinal trauma, and deformity correction, including minimally invasive and keyhole techniques. He has published extensively on topics such as blood loss management and cell salvage in metastatic spine tumour surgery, minimally invasive approaches versus open surgery, and various aspects of spinal oncology and biomechanics. He has received numerous awards including the National Talent Search Scholarship, Clinical Excellence Award, EXSA Silver Award, Faculty Teaching Awards from NUS, and multiple best presentation and innovation awards from organisations such as ISASS, ISSLS, and EUROSPINE. He has held leadership roles including 50th President of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and memberships in international expert groups such as the AO Spine Fracture and Tumor Expert Group and Knowledge Forum Tumor.
